pH Monitors
These electronic microprocessors take pH information from the aquarium water by a probe. They convert the information from the probe into a digital reading displayed on a monitor. These are the most accurate and expensive testing devices available. Most pH monitors are very easy in use and should last a lifetime. Monitors, like Pinpoint powered by a standard 9-volt battery and has been designed as a continuous monitor with an option to turn the unit On and Off. The probe of pH Monitor comes with a 10-foot high suppression cable and BNC connector. Many pH monitors are NOT waterproof and must be operated on a dry surface. |

When to use
It is important to use pH monitors for the tap water that goes into the tank or aquarium. Incorrect pH levels will narrow a slime coat of the fish and could lead to mortality. pH must be measured after the tank has been filed with water. In addition, it is highly recommended to check tank's pH periodically to make sure it stays stable and doesn't increase or decrease significantly over time. In some cases, tank decorations, gravel or corals can change the pH of the decorative aquarium. Those items may slowly leack ions into the water, raising the level of pH.
About pH Value
pH level is generally refers to a measure of the concentration of Hydrogen atoms, that can also be presented as the acidity of a solution. The pH scale is logarithmic, which means, that pH 6 is ten times more acidic that pH 5. With water’s natural range of pH between 6.5 and 7.5, most species of fish can adapt to this level. Freshwater fish are generally more adjustable to pH fluctuations. After fish have adapted to surviving in a certain pH range, the tank’s level of pH should matches the requirements of the fish being kept. In addition to its own effects, pH carries important changes to the toxicity of ammonia and nitrite. (Please see the Ammonia Test Kit page)
Changing the level of pH
In general, most types of fish and shellfish can live in pH ranges from 6.0 to 9.0. However, it is proven that the best quality of life is in the tank occurs between a pH range of 7.0 and 8.0. Changing the pH suddenly, even by a small amount, is a very stressful chemical change for any type of fish. Thus, providing pH stability in a life support system is a must. If pH changes more than 0.3 units per day, it can send the fish into pH shock. The time to make major changes in the pH of the tank water is before adding the population. If adjustment is necessary it must be done slowly, under the level of 0.2 pH within a 24-hour period. Increasing pH is usually easier than lowering it.
pH Down is a liquid pH lowering product, that neutralizes carbonate hardness in the water.
pH UP is a liquid pH raising product that increase the level of pH by neutralizing acidic substances in the aquarium, making water more alkaline. |
